“Fall, leaves, fall; die, flowers, away”
These words from Emily Brontë highlight Autumn giving way to Winter so it is appropriate to pause and reflect on what has been an exceptionally busy and rewarding year for the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society. The summer months once again demonstrated the vitality of our agricultural community, with a full programme of shows and events celebrating the very best of farming, food, and rural enterprise in Northern Ireland.
From the spectacle of the Balmoral Show to local shows, our members have once again showcased their commitment, professionalism, and passion for the industry we are proud to represent.
A Favourable Year for Farming
The year has also been a broadly favourable one for agriculture. Improved weather conditions, buoyant markets, and renewed confidence across many sectors have contributed to a positive outlook for farming. This sense of optimism has been reflected in the enthusiasm and energy evident at our agricultural shows, where the quality of produce, livestock and innovation has been exceptional.
Celebrating Excellence
It was good to see the Royal Ulster Premier Beef & Lamb Championships honoured at the recent NI Farming Awards winning the Farming Event of the Year Award. This recognition is deserved and a testament to the dedication and professionalism of everyone at the RUAS who help plan and deliver this livestock showcase.
Looking Ahead
We now look forward to our important winter events: the eighth Royal Ulster Premier Beef & Lamb Championships which take place on 25th November and the Royal Ulster Winter Fair. Both events will provide exceptional opportunities to celebrate the achievements of our farming community and to recognise the skill and dedication of our exhibitors.
Trade space at the Royal Ulster Winter Fair is again at capacity and we also look forward to seeing some of the best dairy cows at the Eikon Exhibition Centre on 11th December. It will be particularly pleasing to welcome back our Livestock Judge at the Winter Fair as Alta Mae Core from Kentucky steps into the ring 25 years after her very professional performance as our first ‘all breed’ judge at the event.
I encourage RUAS members and supporters to attend and make the most of these flagship events for the beef, dairy and lamb sectors.
Building for the Future
As the Society moves forward from its 170th anniversary, it is timely to look ahead with ambition and clarity of purpose. The launch of our Strategic Plan for 2025 to 2027, together with ongoing work on our Governance restructure, will ensure that the RUAS remains strong, progressive and well-equipped to serve the evolving needs of the agricultural industry in the years to come.
A Word of Thanks
As we approach the end of another year it is the opportune time to extend my thanks to Council members, staff, volunteers, and our wider membership for their commitment, hard work and encouragement in 2025.
May I also take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and pass on my best wishes for 2026 and the future.
