President’s Update – Reflecting, Representing and Recharging

08 July 2025

presidents update reflecting, representing and recharging
As we move through the busy summer season, it’s great to reflect on what has already been a successful year for the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society.

Balmoral Show 2025 – A True Celebration of Agriculture

This year’s Balmoral Show was definitely one to remember. We were blessed with excellent weather, which lifted spirits even more and brought fantastic crowds to the Eikon Exhibition Centre. There was a genuinely positive atmosphere over the four days – a testament to the enduring strength and appeal of our agricultural community.

The quality of competition across all classes was exceptional, and the enthusiasm from exhibitors, visitors, traders and sponsors was heartening. I want to pay particular tribute to the tireless work of our volunteers and staff, whose dedication and team spirit made the Show such a success. Their efforts continue to be the foundation on which the RUAS builds.

Representing RUAS – Near and Far

It has been a great honour to represent the RUAS at a number of events so far this year, including the Royal Cornwall Show, Royal Highland Show, Holstein UK Celebration & AGM in Northern Ireland and CAFRE’s Higher Education graduation ceremony at their Greenmount Campus. These events highlight the deep connections and shared traditions across our agricultural sector, and I was particularly encouraged by the enthusiasm and expertise of so many young people who are keen to pursue careers in our agri-food industry. I’ve also enjoyed attending several Show launches, Shows and agricultural gatherings – each one reminding us of the vibrancy and spirit that exists in our rural community.

Weathering the Challenges of Summer Shows

As the summer Show season continues, we are reminded that not every event will benefit from the sunshine we had at Balmoral. Some Shows continue to face the familiar challenges of poor weather and we all face rising operational costs. These pressures are real, and I commend the committees and volunteers who persevere to ensure their local Shows go ahead. Their commitment to showcasing rural life deserves our full support and further support from the government.

Lantra’s Rural Event e-Training – Supporting the Future

I’d also like to highlight the new Lantra Rural Event e-Training programme, which offers valuable skills and support for anyone involved in organising agricultural events. As we look to the future, it’s vital that we equip ourselves and the next generation with the knowledge and tools to better undertake our leadership roles within the industry. I encourage all members to consider completing this course and to spread the word amongst the wider showing circuit.

A Personal Note – The Importance of Rest

Finally, a gentle reminder to all: amid the flurry of activity, it’s important to take some time away from the farm or workplace to recharge. Whether it’s an afternoon at a local Show, a short break with family, or simply a chance to step back and take stock – looking after our own wellbeing is just as vital as looking after our livestock or crops. Summer often offers that window, and I hope many of you can make the most of that opportunity.

Wishing you all a safe and enjoyable summer, whatever the weather.

Regards,

John
