This week we caught up with the Society’s new Procurement Officer, Sharon Harradine, to find out how she’s settling into the team.
Could you tell us a little about your new role within the Society?
As the Society’s Procurement Officer, my primary goal is to ensure that RUAS achieves optimal value for its financial resources.
Using my detective skills, I hunt down suppliers who will deliver the best goods and services at the best prices. I always want to make sure the Society is getting value for money as well as ensuring the purchase to pay process runs smoothly behind the scenes.
What inspired you to work with the RUAS and get involved in the agricultural sector?
After moving to Northern Ireland in the spring of 2024, my partner insisted that attending the Balmoral Show was an essential introduction to life here – almost like a rite of passage! The experience was fantastic, and when I later saw the role of Procurement Officer advertised, I knew I had to apply!
My appreciation for the agricultural sector goes beyond my love of fresh food. I recognise its critical role in our economy and local communities. Now I’m proud to be part of an organisation dedicated to education about, as well as championing the local agri-food sector.
This year was your first Balmoral Show as a member of the team. Was it what you expected?
My first Balmoral Show as a member of staff, was an eye-opening experience. Seeing this versatile blank canvas transform with innumerable marquees, food stalls and farm machinery was fascinating, especially as behind the scenes there is just a small team of staff and volunteers working tirelessly to bring the whole event to life!
Seeing the level of effort and passion that goes into making the Show a success is incredible. As I explored the Show, it was great to see the visitors enjoying all the attractions that were on offer, and the sunshine also really added to the buzz!
It was a privilege to be part of the small but committed team that hosts this annual event.
What are you most looking forward to in the next year at the Society?
Procurement may not always steal the spotlight, but I do find real satisfaction in making every pound count so I am genuinely excited to dive into more contracts and support my colleagues in ensuring the Society gets the best value for its finances.
I’m also looking forward to experiencing the Royal Ulster Premier Beef & Lamb Championships and Royal Ulster Winter Fair for the first time. I’ve no doubt they’ll each bring fresh insights into the agricultural community.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time when you're not surrounded by tractors, livestock, and delicious local vegetables?
In my free time, you’ll usually find me outdoors! I love gardening and walking, and although progress is slow, I’m currently learning to sail! I also enjoy cooking, especially when I get to share a good meal with family and friends.
